What Is EN8 Steel?
EN8 is the legacy British designation commonly associated with 080M40. It is a medium-carbon steel with a typical specified carbon range of 0.36–0.44%. The grade offers a practical balance of strength, machinability and heat-treatment response for many engineering components.
EN8 can be used in an untreated condition or processed through normalising, hardening and tempering, flame hardening or induction hardening when the component design and section size permit. Final properties depend on the delivery condition, ruling section and heat-treatment cycle.
Medium Carbon Grade
Designed for engineering parts requiring higher strength than ordinary low-carbon mild steel.
Machining Performance
Readily machinable in suitable supply conditions using appropriate tooling and cutting parameters.
Heat-Treatable
May be normalised or hardened and tempered, subject to section size and specified final properties.
Surface Hardening
Flame or induction hardening may be used to improve surface hardness and moderate wear resistance.
EN8 Chemical Composition
The following composition reflects commonly referenced BS 970 data for 080M40. The approved purchase specification and material test certificate must be used for final acceptance.
| Element | Symbol | Specified Range / Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.36–0.44% |
| Silicon | Si | 0.10–0.40% |
| Manganese | Mn | 0.60–1.00% |
| Sulphur | S | 0.050% maximum |
| Phosphorus | P | 0.050% maximum |
Mechanical Properties of EN8 Steel
Mechanical properties vary with bar diameter, ruling section, delivery condition and heat treatment. The table below provides an illustrative BS 970 data-sheet reference and should not replace the agreed purchase specification.
| Reference Condition | Limiting Ruling Section | Hardness | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Elongation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normalised | 150 mm | 152–207 BHN* | 550 MPa minimum | 280 MPa minimum | 16% minimum |
| Q condition | 63 mm | 179–229 BHN | 625–775 MPa | 385 MPa minimum | 16% minimum |
*Normalised hardness is guidance in the referenced data sheet. Specify the required condition and acceptance values on the enquiry and purchase order.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EN8 round bar?
EN8, commonly designated 080M40, is an unalloyed medium-carbon engineering steel used where higher strength than mild steel is required for shafts, axles, pins, studs, bolts and machined parts.
What is the carbon content of EN8 steel?
A commonly referenced BS 970 composition range specifies approximately 0.36–0.44% carbon. Final acceptance must follow the agreed specification and material test certificate.
Can EN8 round bars be heat treated?
Yes. EN8 can be normalised and may be hardened and tempered or surface hardened. Achievable properties depend on bar diameter, ruling section and the heat-treatment process.
What sizes of EN8 round bars are available?
Jain Steels Group’s published round bar range is 25–66 mm. Share the required diameter, length, condition and quantity so availability can be confirmed.
What should I share for an EN8 quotation?
Share EN8/080M40 as the grade, required standard, diameter, length, quantity, delivery condition, tolerance, mechanical properties, testing requirements and delivery location.
